Curriculum Overview
6TH GRADE |
Through
a six week lab experience, students learn to read
and comprehend recipes, apply basic cooking techniques,
use math skills to measure and calculate ingredient
amounts, follow standard sanitation practices, and
learn the importance of
good nutrition and how to apply it to food they prepare.
During the four week textile lab, students learn to safely operate a sewing machine,
measure in inches and fractions of an inch, effectively maneuver sewing mediums
though the machine, and read and follow written instructions.
The areas of concentration offered in the two week child care course are learning
the traits of a responsible child care giver, basic first aid and safety, and
choosing age appropriate books, videos, and toys. Students will also use various
reading techniques to add interest to children's stories as they read them aloud.

7TH GRADE |
Skills that have been learned during
the student’s sixth grade
Family and Consumer Science experience are expanded
upon during their seventh grade course. Along with
extended lab time, new cooking techniques
are learned and practiced while preparing a variety
of healthy, tasty foods. Along with the practical
lab experience, students become more
aware of health issues they may face, if proper nutritional
practices are not followed. Students are given
an opportunity to determine their
body mass index (BMI), as well as study the affects
of poor nutrition and eating disorders. The importance
of being a well informed consumer
is stressed
through reading labels, and comparison shopping.
During their six week textile lab, students use reading and math skills to read
and interpret a sewing pattern. These skills are then put into a practice as
students construct a sewing project. The application of reading and math skills
by the students, stresses the importance of such skills in their everyday lives.

8TH GRADE |
The eighth grade foods & nutrition
experience fortifies the students skills and knowledge
from the previous two years. Students evaluate
their food products in accordance to time, cost,
taste, and nutritional value. They develop more
confidence in their food preparation and sanitation
skills. They investigate the different vocational
choices that are available
as careers in the foods and nutritional areas. Wise
consumerism is stressed through a variety of activities.
The course “Choices” occupies the second six weeks. It is dedicated
to illustrating and guiding students into making positive life “choices”.
A variety of relevant topics are presented through
multimedia and various teaching styles. Various readings
on current issues, promote valuable class discussions
on alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, dating and relationships,
stress management,
self esteem, STDs, and judging others according to
stereotypes. The students aquaint themselves with
different points of views on subjects, learn to distinguish
fact from fiction, as well as, learn refusal skills
when presented with uncomfortable
situations. |
